I think it is more the going in blind aspect with children's books. As parents are we doing them no favours from protecting them? Well, that's a different, and huge, issue. But would a warning that the book included the death of a grandparent, ruin a book? In this case it may certainly have affected sales.

I think it is useful to know if a book is dealing with a sensitive subject. My eldest, Miss E, was bought a book because the main character had the same name as her, but it dealt with the death of a grandparent, and E had lost her Grandad not long before. I've actually put it away until she's older as I know E would be upset by this. It's not that we're avoiding the subject - we talk about her Grampy, have photos up etc, but I just know there'd be nights of tears and I don't think she'd handle it well. It hinted at a 'loss' on the blurb but obviously not enough for the person who bought it her to pick up on.

E's also been upset by a book that described life in the workhouse where a family were seperated and again it really upset her. She is sensitive, and there are some things I know she's just not ready for at 9 years old. Maybe I'm a bit overprotective, but some stuff is too much too soon.

Blimey, some topics that are becoming all too common in children's books. Really sad if it is true that authors are deliberately trying to outdo each other with filth in their books.

Hi,
I totally love Michael Rosen's sad book! Be prepared for an emotional jolt, though! I recently read this in The Guardian and was really shocked about the content of some "older" children's books. Content that I'd have difficulty reading, never mind kids!!
